| Link spam has become a commonplace thing on the internet. As it has evolved, methods of scamming people and shifting spam past the security fence have also evolved.
One common practice is called a “clique attack.”
What this involves is a web ring, which contains a number of pages that all lead to each other. This gives off the appearance of the web ring having authority or authenticity.
The pages in this vile ring also don’t link to anything else but the sites involved with the ring, which are usually pornography sites or sites spamming products.
Every time someone happenstances upon this webring they get caught up in roaming the many sites involved which may leave your computer open to different types of malware or spam. They also contribute, unknowingly, to those site’s PageRanks, which also pushes that maladaptive web ring to the top of the search engine results.
Google’s got a Brand New Bag -
A While back Google ordered a patent for their massive search engine. The patent detailed a system that would be able to identify bad links by comparing certain nuances between them and site with authentic links.
By watching certain sites and their nasty links, Google can pull the plug on the web rings attempts at artificially inflating their PageRank and leave room for the more important businesses out there to make it to the top of the search results.
